Hiram 'Hap' Graham
First Officer
"I jump into Hell for a living."
|
Physical
Description:
There is nothing particularly
exceptional about the physical appearance of Hiram Graham. He has brown eyes and dark hair. Fairly attractive, his face almost
never has a frown on it. He is near six feet tall, and in good shape but much more wiry than muscular. He has a few scars on
his body from various minor wounds during the war, but nothing particularly noticeable. After spending many days wearing
the same uncomfortable uniform, he does not really care that much about what he is wearing. He also has almost no fashion
sense, but he tends to err on the side of formality if he has any question about appropriate dress.

Personality/Roleplaying
tips:
*Still
rather idealistic and committed to the Alliance, but he generally tries to get along with people and thus he keeps his politics
to himself.
*Almost always in a cheerful, positive mood. This disposition led to him getting the nickname Happy from the other men
he served with in the war, which was later shortened to just Hap.
*Much more of a follower than a leader. He tends to be fairly deferential to others, particularly figures of authority.
*No
fear of space or heights. Not at all a daredevil, but he has become desensitized to a lot of fear of death. He is, however,
very afraid of most animals, particularly horses, as he had never seen any before the war. The entire concept of riding on
top of a large creature with a mind of its own frightens and confuses him, though he does wish to confront and conquer this
fear someday, hopefully a day far off in the future.
*Very
limited in his vices. Seldom drinks. Picked up smoking during the war, but has been trying to quite since then and has successfully
controlled the habit to the point that he only tends to smoke these days after jumps or EVA operations.
*Fairly
prudish and old-fashioned, and even somewhat awkward, when it comes to sex and relations with members of the opposite sex.
*Huge
baseball fan, he still checks the scores for the Londinium leagues over the cortex whenever he can.
|
Skills/Abilities:
*Excellent
at EVA operations.
*Highly
Proficient in several techniques for getting from a flying craft to the ground safely, ranging from low-altitude to low-orbit
and from low-tech to high-tech.
*Proficient
in infantry combat and tactics.
*Basic
skills in terrestrial navigation, tracking, and wilderness survival.
*Good
athlete. Particularly a good baseball player.
Private Motivations:
*Largely
an open book. His main desires are to work to support his family, as well as to save up money for himself again to get another
shot at his farm dream.
*Will
usually follow the law or an order even if he is not sure that he is doing the right thing.
*Has
some battle shock symptoms, such as shaking hands and flashback nightmares, that pop up from time to time, but he ignores
them as much as possible.

History: Hiram
was born into a middle class family in Londinium. His family was living the Anglo-Sino dream, and he was set to go to college
to study for an advanced profession. He was a big proponent of unifying all planets under the Alliance, seeing the Alliance
as the only force that could end many illegal and immoral processes in the outer worlds as well as bringing material progress
to those worlds. When the war began, Hiram decided to enlist and fight for unification rather than going to college.
In
the Alliance Army he joined the 527th Spaceborne Division. This was a unit designed to be deployed to any hotspot quickly.
They used a variety of means to do this, from old-fashioned parachutes to high-tech dropships. They also trained in EVA techniques
for any necessary space operations. The motto for this division was “First in, last out,” and they lived up to
it throughout the war, often being among the first Alliance units deployed to a region and then hanging on throughout the
battle, often only leaving to be deployed to another more pressing hot spot. Hiram served well throughout the war, being promoted
up to sergeant by the Battle of Serenity and earning two commendations for courage and valor. The first came from his performance
in the Battle of Greenleaf, an important battle in the middle of the war in which the 527th dropped onto Greenleaf and held
off a much larger Independent force for almost two weeks while waiting for an Alliance army to arrive. The 527th took 60%
casualties during the battle, but their stand allowed time for the larger Alliance force to arrive and push the Independents
back. Hiram received a commendation for his part in destroying an Independent Artillery position that could have decimated
the Alliance lines during this battle.
Hiram served with the 527th in other many major and minor battles throughout
the war. Almost miraculously considering the amount of combat he saw, he only received a few minor wounds, nothing that kept
him out of the war for more than a month. The 527th eventually ended up at the Battle of Serenity, during which Hiram was
tasked with delivering a crucial message about the enemy position from his cut-off company to Alliance HQ. He got lost while
trying to find HQ, and suddenly found himself in the midst of an Independent air-tank squadron. He managed to run through
the squadron, which quickly gave chase. Then his luck suddenly turned when he ran into an Alliance anti-tank position. This
position destroyed the tanks, and Hiram was able to deliver the message, earning a commendation for both delivering the message
and his role in the ambush and destruction of the tanks. This commendation had special significance to Hiram, because General
Richard Williams, the victorious Alliance commander at the Battle of Serenity and one of Hiram’s heroes, has been at
HQ that day and personally thanked Hiram for delivering the message. To this day Hiram keeps a picture of General Williams
wherever he calls home.
After the war ended, Hiram decided to stay in the army, not sure he would fit in with civilian
life after half a decade of war. The 527th was tasked to the outer worlds mostly on Reaver duty. It was hoped that their rapid
deployment ability would allow them to respond fast enough to stop Reaver attacks. This proved to be a failure, and Hiram
spent the next several years with his unit constantly boarding ships or jumping into villages only to find the horrible remains
of a Reaver attack. This took its toll on Hiram’s commitment, as did his observation that the Alliance failed to live
up to his high ideals and could not stop most of the evils from occurring outside of the core worlds. Hiram eventually left
the army when he had saved up enough money to buy a small farm, where he hoped to settle down and live out the rest of his
life without any need to set foot in space except to visit his family from time to time. Unfortunately, just as he had found
the perfect farm he received word that his father had had an accident that left him seriously injured and partially paralyzed.
The advanced medical technology available in the core allowed him to recover fully, but these treatments were expensive and
although the Alliance universal health coverage took care of some of the costs most of the family savings were still lost.
Hiram decided to send his own savings home to his family, supporting his father’s recovery and the college tuition of
his younger sister. His farm dreams lost, had to go back to work, at first attempting to find terrestrial labor before realizing
that his expertise in EVA operations opened up much more lucrative jobs in space. So, he began to search for a job for an
ex-soldier with experience in combat, EVA, and jumping out of perfectly good ships, eventually receiving information from
an old army buddy that many Alliance military veterans in the outer planets were finding work as privateers contracted to
enforce Alliance interests in the region. This led Hiram to the Lotus.
