Orenda Brandt
Detective
"I can't decide if I'm bustin the criminals or
workin' for 'em."
|
Age: 28 standard years Sex: Female Height: 5 feet 5 inches Weight: 135 pounds Hair: Black, long Eyes: Cinnamon brown Complexion: Dark
tan, reflecting her Native American heritage. She is prone to freckles, despite her dark complexion. Build:
Slim and athletic. Identifying marks: A thin knife scar running from
her left earlobe, along her jawbone, to half way to her chin. She has a black tribal tattoo of an owl on her right shoulder.
Various fine scars on her arms and hands from knife fights.
General Appearance: Tends
to wear tight black suede pants with fringe at the
outer seam, and actual cowboy boots. She is rarely without her hairbone choker and a pair of owl feathers tied into
her hair. She is proud of her Native American ancestry. Her hair is blueblack, long and usually worn either
loose or in a single braid. Silver and turquoise bracelets and earrings are her usual adornment as well.

Personality/play tips: *Orenda
tends to pick or bite at her cuticles when anxious or bored, to the point of bleeding. Not her nails, but the cuticle
around the nail. *She is usually very still, and self contained, but she can
move very quickly. Like a cat she can go from seeming relaxed stillness to action without pausing to blink. *Despite her stillness and ability to wait things out, she has a quick temper that has gotten
her into trouble. But she doesn’t often hold grudges. Once the anger is spent, it is usually released. She
CAN hold a grudge, but she rarely does. *Orenda loves animals and children.
If it has fur, or even scales, she could coo over it and go all maternal. She can put a bullet in a man or woman
if she has to, but don’t try to hurt a child or animal. She is NOT a farm gal, and prefers her meat anonymous. *She has a problem with heights. Space doesn’t bother her, but she does get anxious
at take offs and landings, often gripping something for dear life, without being obvious about it, at such times. *She knows how to pilot small craft, but will only do so in extreme emergencies. Between
her fear of heights and a natural talent for being a hazard at the controls those who have flown with her in the past have
rediscovered their religion. *Very focused and no nonsense when working a crime
scene. She canvases, catalogues, images, collects, bags and tags. *She
has a pleasant singing voice, and tends to sing to herself as she works in the lab, but not when working a crime scene. She
believes the crime scene deserves a solemn respect. She is not a star quality singer, but she can hold her own. There
in is the end of her musical ability. The only thing she can PLAY is a music disk. *She
can also be found shuffle cards, walking a coin across her fingers or other exercises to keep her hands fast and nimble.

Abilities: First and foremost she
is a forensics specialist. She rarely misses anything when canvassing a crime scene. She is a stickler for procedure
on a scene and can spend hours upon hours collecting trace evidence and documenting.
She is good with sidearms, a decent
shot she cleared her shooting tests with a slightly above average score, but she is not a sharp shooter. She couldn’t
guarantee a kill shot on someone holding a hostage. She can use a rifle, but her accuracy suffers for it. She tends and cleans
her own guns, not trusting anyone else to do it right.
She is downright deadly with a knife. The scar on her
jaw is from a knife fight. She can throw a knife with more accuracy then she can shoot. She usually has three
throwing knives on her person as well as a Bowie blade.
She is a good hand to hand fighter, but her style is down and
dirty and brawl, with some kickboxing thrown in. She works out often with a punching bag. “I like to hit things.”
She
is excellent as a jack of all trades in a forensics lab. But she isn’t afraid or ashamed to call in specialists.
She
is a good cook, not a great one, but a good one.
Orenda excels at slight of hand. She is an excellent pick pocket,
and can plant just about anything on anyone. She learned illusion and stage magic from her father’s knee, and
she can do close up illusions. She’s very adept with card tricks. Not many will play cards with her, although
she doesn’t cheat, she does have a natural knack for counting. She often uses that knowledge to look past misdirection
and feints to figure out criminals ‘tricks’.

History: The daughter of a fairly famous
stage magician “Skyhawk” and his artist wife, Orenda was born one route to a show, amidst the stars. She
grew up on the move, and learned early about illusion and not taking what one sees for granted. By the time she was
six she was actually helping in the magic show, disappearing, carrying in props, being cute.
Despite the constant wandering,
Orenda was taught reading, writing, mathematics, history, if not by her educated parents by stage hands and other travelers.
She excelled in science, as its principles applied to illusion and the stage magic she was raised around. She was also taught
about her family heritage, not only general history, but Native American history. Her long vacations with her grandparents
on Persephone allowed her time among other Amerindians.
When she was 15 Orenda’s father was performing for an
audience on Athens when a man who had been heckling throughout the performance fired three shots into the “Box of Mystery”
to ‘prove that Gou tsao de Injun didn’t really disappear’. Skyhawk was dead within moments.
The man who killed him was arrested, but not convicted due to ‘mitigating’ circumstances. This started Orenda’s
obsession with justice.
Orenda spent the next three years on Persephone with her mother and grandparents, living in
the Native American community there, exploring her heritage and studying everything she could to help her get into the law
academy. She became a street cop in the slums, advancing her career by studying procedure, and taking an interest in
the minutiae of crime scene investigation. It was a laborious process, but she found she had a sharp eye, and a knack
for the process, which she saw as almost ritualistic. She prefers the collection of evidence part of the job.
She
was taken under the wing of an old world style forensic specialist, Jacen Killian, and she learned the art, as she considers
it, more in depth.
When Orenda was 23 she found evidence in a case that was not only pat and neat, but placed where
it shouldn’t be. Things did not add up, and she considered the scene, a murder investigation, staged. Later she
caught a superior officer destroying evidence. He was protecting a very high society citizen and setting up a petty
thief. The evidence gone, Orenda directly confronted the superior, instead of collecting evidence, as she was long trained
to. Her quick temper got the better of her and she ended up assaulting him. She was arrested and fired. Her word
against his meant nothing more than the case getting thrown out and the killer going free anyway.
Orenda hates politics,
despises kiss ups, and loathes injustice. She is outspoken, and does not keep her opinion to herself, which did not
earn her points or friends among the hierarchy. She will follow orders so long as she is not ordered to do anything
she finds morally repugnant. She will tamper with evidence for no one. However, she will try to reign in
her temper and accumulate evidence if she thinks others are abusing their power. On reflection she realizes talking
with her fists was most likely the dumbest thing she ever did. Her flashfire temper is something she often struggles
against.
